Europia, A Spirit Store a Buzz Above the Rest

Writing at outlook teaches you many things: to appreciate a good happy hour, to always have an office refrigerator full of beer and to know where the closest bar or liquor store is located. With that, it is no coincidence that we are only blocks away from Europia Wine and Spirits, the go-to, gay owned and friendly liquor store on High Street.

Steven Grabner, owner of Europia, said originally he opened the store because there was a need for it in the Short North, along with his love for wine, spirits and beer, and wanting to make the products he enjoyed available for people. Now, 16 years later, Europia has become a staple in the Short North, and also does its part to give back to the neighborhood. The store is a sponsor of Columbus Pride every year, which comes as no surprise since the staff is ?100 percent lesbian, gay and bisexually owned and operated,? and has been since the opening. Europia also works with the Human Rights Campaign Gala to support their wine auction.

Over the years Europia has seen a lot of change in the Short North. ?This biggest change has been as the demographics of the neighborhood have become slightly more affluent, our products have changed with the change of the neighborhood,? said Steven.

Another aspect of Columbus that has changed over the years is the move towards local goods. Europia carries most of the local Ohio and Columbus alcohol products. ?When we first opened, the availability of local was slim. As new products have popped up, we?ve stood behind them,? said Steven. ?It?s giving back to the neighborhood. The neighborhood is so supportive of local grown, local business. Us being in this neighborhood, it?s been great to do these collaborations with all these local distilleries and breweries.?

The store highlights many of these local products in their gift baskets; an idea that Steven said was started due to customer demand. Customers can either design a basket themselves, or choose a themed basket. Some of the themed baskets include a Bloody Mary drink basket, or ?the ultimate martini? basket. ?Everything you need, just add ice,? said Steven. The gift baskets range in price from $49 to $99.

Aside from introducing products to customers through the baskets, Europia also holds a wine tasting once a month in the cellar below the store. The class, which holds 24 people, is lead by a different distributor or wine maker, and up to eight different wines are tasted during each class. ?We were able to get a tasting license, which allowed us to introduce people to wines they may not know themselves and expand their taste,? said Steven. Some of the previous visitors to the tasting have been Brothers Drake, Wine Trends and Solera. The next wine tasting is October 18 at 6:30p, and spots are still available.

Like most companies now, Europia uses social media as form to keep in constant contact with its customers. Their Facebook is updated almost daily to announce new products on the shelves or to remind people that the weekend is coming up and it is time to stock up on their favorite drinks to celebrate. Sometimes the posts are just fun postings for the customers. ?We here at Europia feel Thursdays are underrated and need to be celebrated? OK we say the same for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So, Cheers.?

Steven has also created a blog for the store, where he creates food recipes and then shares what wines would be a great pairing for the meal. ?A lot of it was customer driven, people coming in and asking, ?Hey, what goes with this??? said Steven. ?Here?s a new wine and here?s an easy meal.? For example, one of the recipes was lamb and beef burgers with tomato cucumber tabouli and he suggested to pair it with a French sauvignon or cote du rhone. Steven posts all of the recipes and pairings to the Europia website, and posts links on the Facebook. He updates the blog once a week, and he said that he tries to keep it seasonal, most of the summer he was posting lighter recipes and wine pairings.

With the arrival of fall, the recipes and the store product will be evolving with the season. ?As we get into the fall we will have more of the reds and a little heartier whites, as opposed to summer when it?s a little lighter,? said Steven. ?We?ve already started getting in the October fest and pumpkin beers.?

Whether it is looking for local ale, the makings for the perfect Manhattan, or the right wine to pair with dinner, Europia Wine and Sprits is stocked with the right products and knowledgeable staff to ensure that the drinking needs of the Short North are met. ?Because of the location we are in, people are always looking for the newest and latest,? said Steven. ?We try to make products easily accessible so they are not having to drive from place to place.?

As part of the ever-growing Dane-Elec family of flash drives, the Dane-Elec LifeBytes drive (8GB) ($12.99 direct) has all the hallmarks of other flash drives in the Dane-Elec line, like a quirky, youth-oriented design and an affordable price tag. It also shares some of the same drawbacks of its brethren, namely an all-plastic construction and so-so performance. But given the fact that it's geared a younger crowd that's typically more interested in flair than transfer speeds, its shortcomings are forgivable, and in that regard it's a decent choice for youngsters, though it could stand to use some sort of password protection.

Design and Features
The LifeBytes drive's square-shaped chassis is fairly tiny, and its rounded edges bring to mind an App that you'd find on an Apple iOS. It weighs next to nothing since the entire drive - including the USB plug ? is constructed out of plastic. The Lifebytes drives are available with four different designs: a mustache, a peace sign, a tribal design, and a tattoo (our review unit), and it was decked out in an all-black design with hints of gray on the retractable USB plug, the sliding mechanism on the left side, and the titular tattoo design on the face. A slit on the lower right side of the drive allows it to be attached to a lanyard.

Like other Dane-Elec drives, the LifeBytes flash drive ships free of preloaded software. While we're not typically fans of preinstalled programs, it is somewhat troubling that a drive marketed toward a younger crowd doesn't feature any sort of password protection. I'm not a parent, but I can imagine that no one would want their child's readily accessible personal data falling into the hands of a total stranger. You'd be better off buying a drive along the lines of the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) . It's not the coolest looking drive by any measure, but it offers a level of security that most parents would appreciate.

The LifeBytes drive offers 8GB of storage space, with 7.58GB of usable space. Its price tag of $12.99 breaks down to $1.62 per GB, giving it more bang for the buck than the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives ($1.87 per gigabyte), the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it USB Drive ($1.83 per gigabyte), and the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) ($1.75 per gigabyte). Only the Duracell Rugged USB Drive (16GB) proved to be a better value, boiling down to $1.25 per GB.

Performance
The LifeBytes drive is a decent performer compared to other drives in its price range. In our timed data transfer tests, it produced a write speed of 4.4MBps and a read speed of 19.42MBps. While the LifeBytes' write speed was identical to that of the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives (4.4MBps write), it was slower than the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it (6MBps write). The LifeBytes' was a more solid contender when it came down to read speeds, outpacing the Avengers USB Drives (16.3MBps read) as well as the Store N' Go Clip-it (15MBps read). Moreover, the LifeBytes drive outperformed the Duracell Rugged USB Drive (16GB) (4.1 MBps write; 12.5MBps read) on both write and read speeds. Conversely, the DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) (9.6MBps write, 24MBps read) outgunned the LifeBytes drive on both prongs.

The Dane-Elec LifeBytes flash drive is a decent choice for younger consumers looking for an affordable and (arguably) stylish way to transport their data. It's not the fastest or most rugged drive available, nor is it intended to be. However, parents seeking peace of mind would be better off purchasing a flash drive with password protection for their children, like our current Editors' Choice for flash drives, the DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB). Its lack of a cool design is more than offset by the level of protection it offers.

Layoffs and loans may be dominating our Sharp coverage at the moment, but that just makes this type of news all the sweeter. The company has announced its LCD panel type 5 -- a 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display packing a Retina-busting 443 ppi (just trumping LG's similar 440 ppi LCD). An outcome of its layer-reducing CG-Silicon technology, the smartphone-targeted screen goes into full-scale production this month and will be shown off at CEATEC Japan this very week. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Supporters of Venezuelan presidential candidate Henrique Capriles had just set out in a caravan of cars for an afternoon of campaigning when they came to a road blocked by a crowd of President Hugo Chavez's loyalists.

Witnesses said some people in the caravan had gotten out to try to convince the Chavez supporters to let them through when gunfire rang out. Two Capriles supporters died in the violence on Saturday in the western state of Barinas and a third was seriously wounded.

There have been other spasms of violence in the heated campaign ahead of Venezuela's Oct. 7 election, but this was the first fatal incident, and it sharply ratcheted up tensions.

Capriles condemned the violence on Sunday, saying at a campaign rally: "The time of hatred is going to be buried in Venezuela." Chavez also called for calm, saying: "It's not with violence that we're going to face each other. It's vote against vote."

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said on Sunday in a message on Twitter that one suspect was arrested in the killings, though he didn't identify the suspect or say how he was captured.

Opposition politician Pedro Castillo, who was in the caravan and witnessed the violence, said there was no physical confrontation before the shooting erupted. He said the caravan was stopped in a long line of cars when some of the Capriles supporters got out, and that more than two dozen Chavez supporters had laid tires in the road to block traffic.

A video posted online showed the two groups arguing.

One opposition supporter, 32-year-old Jason Valero, was among those standing in the street and tried to walk through the barricade, Castillo said. Then, he was shot in the chest, Castillo said.

"There wasn't even a shove," Castillo said. "The matter went from something verbal to taking out a gun and despicably killing a person, and then to starting with a barrage of gunshots."

The video posted on YouTube showed people scattering as the shots rang out.

An older opposition supporter, Omar Fernandez, had been blowing on a horn of the sort used in political rallies, Castillo said. Fernandez was wounded in the neck and died at a hospital, he said.

Fernandez had been an agricultural secretary for the opposition party Un Nuevo Tiempo in the town of Barinitas, said opposition politician Rafael Riera, who also witnessed the shooting.

Valero was a father of four who worked in a family cargo truck business, Castillo said.

A third man, local campaign photographer Hector Rojas, was seriously wounded in the shooting, while Castillo said a teenage girl suffered a less serious wound and was released from a hospital.

Riera said the people in the caravan had simply wanted to make a swing through the area and had tried to tell the Chavez supporters "we didn't want any sort of problems."

Riera said that people had seen a truck nearby and "from there some individuals got out and fired some shots."

Both opposition politicians said that after the shooting one suspect was stopped by people before he could get away, and was then detained by authorities. They also said a truck was burned after the shooting.

"What we want is what their relatives are demanding... that justice be done and that this act not go unpunished," said Castillo, who attended wakes for the victims.

In another previous outburst of campaign-related violence, at least 14 people were injured on Sept. 12 when stone throwing broke out after Chavez backers blocked a road trying to prevent Capriles from reaching an event in Puerto Cabello.

In March, shots erupted while Capriles was visiting a Caracas district that traditionally has been pro-Chavez, and one opposition supporter was wounded.
