UPDATE: Toyota announced a 17.2 percent rise in November auto sales from a year earlier, missing analysts' consensus estimate of a 20 percent gain.

--------------

EARLIER:?GM reported monthly auto sales figures well below expectations. The company said sales rose 3.4 percent versus analysts' consensus estimate of 7.6 percent.

Below is an excerpt from the GM release:

?The East Coast?s ongoing recovery from Hurricane Sandy helped drive the November SAAR?materially higher, but it benefited our competitors more than GM, since they rely on the region for more of their sales,? McNeil said.

?It?s clear that the industry will come in at the high end of our full-year sales forecast,? he added. ?Exactly how much growth we can expect next year will depend in part on how Congress and the president resolve the fiscal cliff issue. Consumers hate uncertainty, so an agreement on ways to reduce long-term federal budget deficits could remove an impediment to growth.?

EARLIER:?Ford Motor just released monthly auto sales figures for November, rising 6.4 percent from a year earlier versus expectations of a 2.4 percent gain as the industry continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Nissan also posted a monster month, with sales up 12.9 percent versus estimates of a 4.8 percent rise.

Below is an excerpt from the Ford release:

November brought growth throughout Ford's product portfolio in the U.S., with car sales up 15 percent, utilities up 2 percent and trucks up 4 percent.??

"November represented a strong month for the industry, and Ford sales performed well across the board," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "We saw sharp increases in demand for Ford's fuel-efficient small cars, our best-ever month for electrified vehicles and growing demand for our fuel-efficient and capable F-Series pickups."

Ford had its best small car November sales month since 2000, with Focus, the all-new C-MAX Hybrids and Fiesta sales totaling 26,848 vehicles ? a 76 percent increase over last year. Focus sales were up 56 percent versus year-ago levels, while the all-new C-MAX Hybrid lineup gained 52 percent versus October, when the C-MAX Energi went on sale.

The Ford F-Series, America's best-selling vehicle, posted an 18 percent increase, with 56,299 vehicles sold in November. This represents F-Series' best November since 2005 and 16 straight months of year-over-year sales increases.??

Ford's total November sales of 177,673 vehicles increased 6 percent versus last year, with retail sales up 12 percent.

Ford also announced its 2013 first-quarter North American production plan. The company plans to build 750,000 vehicles in the first quarter, up 11 percent (73,000 vehicles) from 2012's first quarter. Fourth quarter production of 725,000 vehicles is unchanged from previous guidance.

ORIGINAL:?All of the major auto manufacturers, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, and Honda, report monthly sales figures today.

Chrysler kicked things off this morning, announcing a 14 percent rise in November sales from the previous year. However, analysts were expecting a 16 percent gain.

Nonetheless, it was Chrysler's best November in five years. One executive shrugged off the fiscal cliff in the press release and hinted that Hurricane Sandy still is weighing on sales:

?Even with all the talk of a looming fiscal cliff, Chrysler Group is well positioned for a strong sales finish to the year,? said Reid Bigland, President and CEO ? Dodge Brand and Head of U.S. Sales. ?Our November sales were up 14 percent and we extended our sales streak to 32-consecutive months of year-over-year sales gains. We are expecting a strong December as the industry continues to recover from the East Coast hurricane and consumers continue to respond to our popular year-end Big Finish event.?

Analysts project that November was a blockbuster month for total vehicle sales. The consensus estimate is a rise to 15.00M units sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR), up from 14.22M in October.

We will add sales figures and releases from GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan as they report throughout the day. Click here for live updates >

Toll authority quick to dun drivers; not so good at refunds

A North Texas Tollway Authority bank account contains more than $57,000 collected from customers who have overpaid their ZipCash bills.

By Scott FriedmanNBCDFW

The North Texas Tollway Authority is quick to send drivers a bill for using toll roads in North Texas, but the agency is not so fast in tracking down customers when it owes them money.

An NBC 5 investigation has discovered that money from drivers who overpay on ZipCash bills is deposited into what the NTTA calls the Overpayment Account -- not refunded or credited toward a future trip on a toll road.

The NTTA has not previously made the bank account public. It contains more than $57,000 collected from ZipCash users who have overpaid.

NTTA toll roads are cashless. Drivers without TollTags are billed by ZipCash, the agency's pay-by-invoice system.

The NBC 5 Investigates team filed an open records request to find out how many people have money sitting in the account. The list of names is more than 950 pages long.

The list NTTA provided to NBC 5 Investigates did not include any identifying information beyond the drivers' names.

Haskell Tilson's name appears on the list. NBC 5 Investigates got Tilson's license plate number and sent it to the NTTA to confirm that he is the same person with money in the overpayment account.

Tilson's $2.22 in the account is certainly not a lot of money, but he said it's the principle that concerns him.

"Why don't they just credit it to the next bill or be honest about it and just send me a check for $2.22?" he said.

While the agency spends money sending bills to collect small toll amounts, the NTTA doesn't want to spend money to send out small refunds.

"And if that costs more to return it, we can't be using dollars to chase dimes," NTTA spokesman Michael Ray said. "That's not a good use of toll-payer money. They expect us to be good stewards of their money."

Watch NBCDFW.com's video report on the toll authority

Drivers have no way of knowing if their money is stuck in the overpayment account. Even though NTTA posts lists of people who owe the most in tolls, it has never publicly shared the list of people stuck in limbo.

NBC 5 Investigates asked Rey why the NTTA won't post the list and let people know about the account so they can call and ask that the money be credited to their ZipCash account.

"Well, because I think it makes good financial sense not to be starting a conversation over money that would cost us more to refund than it would be to send," he said.

While the money sits in the NTTA's hands, the agency is collecting interest on the $57,812.42 currently in the overpayment account.

The NTTA said it would refund money to customers with more than $2.50 in the overpayment account. But NBC 5 Investigates found that more than 1,500 people who are owed more than $2.50 have not received a refund or credit.

The NTTA claims it did not have enough information to find those people or set up an account for them.

If the money isn't claimed within three years, it will be sent to the Texas State Comptroller's unclaimed property division, which may ultimately notify people about their missing money.

The comptroller publicly posts a list of people with money in its account.

The tollway authority said it's just not worth the agency's time to post its own list because most of the people on the list are owed only pennies.

"And, honestly, that's what this is -- it's a lot of nickels and dimes, a lot of pennies and two cents," Rey said.

The NTTA says there is currently $57,812.42 in the overpayment account.

Search the NTTA overpayment database

The account was created in August of 2009. But the NTTA has only provided NBC 5 Investigates with a detailed spreadsheet documenting transactions from May 2010 to Nov. 26, 2012.

Customers who find their names on the list can call the NTTA customer service center at 972-818-NTTA (927-818-6882). The agency says it will credit the money to their account if the customers can provide proper identifying information.?

China warns North Korea about rocket test plans (+video)

North Korea, a longtime Chinese ally, plans to launch a long-range rocket later this month, raising tensions with the US and South Korea.?

By Associated Press / December 2, 2012

Chinese President Hu Jintao, (r), greets North Korean envoy Kim Yong Il, head of the international department of the Workers' Party of Korea, during their meeting in Beijing in April. On Sunday, China expressed concern about its longtime ally's plan to launch a long-range rocket later this month.

All sides should work for stability and avoid acts that raise tensions, the Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement. It acknowledged?North?Korea's?right to the peaceful use of outer space, but said that had to be harmonized with restrictions including those set by the United Nations Security Council.

"We hope all relevant parties will do that which benefits peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, hope all sides will respond calmly and avoid exacerbating the situation," ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in the statement.

The?North?Korean launch, set for Dec. 10 to 22, is likely to heighten already strained tensions with Washington and Seoul as South?Korea?plans to hold a presidential election on Dec. 19 and President Barack Obama prepares to begin his second term.

It would be?North?Korea's?second launch attempt under leader Kim Jong-un, who took power following his father Kim Jong-il's death nearly a year ago. That first launch eight months ago earned?North?Korea widespread international condemnation, despite ending in an embarrassing misfire.

Some analysts have expressed skepticism that?North?Korea?has corrected whatever caused the first failure. North?Korea?says the rocket will be mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite.

Despite its close ties to?North?Korea, previous Chinese statements have had little perceptible effect.

China is?North?Korea's?only major political ally and its main source of food and fuel for keeping the?North's moribund economy from collapsing. However, Beijing has been highly resistant to using any of its leverage to moderate?North?Korea's?behavior, fearing that could cause an implosion leading to political chaos and a wave of refugees crossing its border.

Beginning your own multi-level marketing business may be easier than finding a part-time job. It is difficult to start a small business, but as you network, you can start to be profitable. This article includes powerful tips on starting and succeeding in MLM.

Consult digital resources like online discussion boards and forums for advice and insight into multi-level marketing. These forums have experts who generously share their knowledge, as well as people who are just getting started. You can learn something from everyone. You might also meet potential partners or create business connections on these forums.

Always nod your head when talking to a multi-level marketing lead; never shake it. Your body language has to be just as positive as your choice of words. )

TIP! Schedule time to relax with friends and family which can help take away some of the business stress you are dealing with. In the beginning, expect that your business will demand more of your time.

Research and apply the best methods for finding new clients. Your goal should be to get new customers and solid leads. Limiting yourself to your inner circle of friends and family will limit your potential for growth and profit. You must put in the effort to find clients outside of those you already know so that you can allow new possibilities in your doors.

It?s important to spend as much time as possible on seeking out new leads. This is the method that generates the most money. While the other aspects of your day, such as reading your emails and going to meetings, are an important part of having a business, they don?t actually make you money. Making your money revolves primarily around obtaining leads and closing those leads.

Research compensation plans for the various types of multi-level marketing opportunities that you are considering. Focus on generating higher returns from more than one source of income. Make sure you refer your sale to your sponsors. This is actually a good thing because it gives you leverage, and your sponsor should be helpful to you.

TIP! Having a monthly budget is important. Do some research to find out the requirements for your initial investment.

Look at what other multilevel marketing professionals are doing and learn from their successes. Before long you will be acting and thinking with the same mindset as those independent distributors and your success rate should dramatically improve.

Business Plan

Know your business plan backwards and forwards, but be flexible enough that you won?t be lost if you miss an appointment or something bad happens. Be aware of what needs to be done each month, and then adjust this according to what you are actually capable of doing. Use your business plan to calculate a satisfactory and profitable goal from the gap between these two numbers.

TIP! Try and emulate the characteristics of independent distributors when dealing with network marketing. By emulating these role models, you can enhance your ability to act and think the way that they do, thereby increasing your successfulness.

When doing multilevel marketing, it is critical that you are an expert, which means you are very knowledgeable about your product. When you care about your product and show passion for it, this passion will show to everyone you come into contact with. People will also be more willing to join your downline if they see how passionate you are about your products. Learning about the product makes it easier to give honest, sincere reviews that your potential clients will appreciate.

Investigate a company with the BBB before you give any money to a marketing business. There are always a few bad apples in the bunch. Do not be hasty. Make sure that the investment you are making is smart. Check things out with a company, like the BBB, who has reviews of other companies.

By joining online forums you can participate and learn a lot of information from others. These forums can provide valuable tips and information on network marketing, and as a bonus, they are free. Do an Internet search and find a forum that you enjoy, and spend a little time there each day picking up tips from others in the business.

TIP! Everyone is egotistical to some extent, and that means we like talking about ourselves. This gives you an opportunity to learn what makes you customers tick.

Network Marketing

Treat your network marketing as a business at all times. When it comes to your networking profit potential, you get what you give. You must put in a lot of time and effort if you hope to do well in network marketing. You have to make a promise to yourself that you?ll work extremely hard every day, and you?ll be well on your way to success with multi-level marketing.

Multilevel marketing utilizes individuals already within your own firm to make contacts and form a larger network of helpful business partners. Assemble a team of spokesmen who speak highly of your company, and get them talking to everyone they know about the benefits of your products. This is the ultimate model in networking success.

TIP! Have a strict business plan, but be flexible in case of unexpected occurrences and a few missed deadlines. Figure out how much you have to do and how much you can actually do in a given time frame.

Making sure you put your customers first is a must in MLM. Without it you?re nothing; the customers are what make you successful. If your customers are not happy, your business definitely will not succeed. Only talk about 20% of the time. Spend the other 80% of the conversation listening.

Even the largest companies have recognized the potential of network marketing, and may choose yours to reach out to people. Use these tips to become a successful network marketer.

Castle in the Sea: Homeschooling High School: Math

Well, this should be short.

I am not a math person. Some of my children are not math persons. Others of them are. Over the years, as I have dealt with both math persons and non-math persons, in the context of having to launch them, eventually and more or less single-handedly, into the rest of their lives, I have distilled my philosophy of math education to the following single word:

Whatever.?

*

OK, that's not really acceptable as a philosophy of anything. Try again.

*

I have often observed that one of the real advantages of homeschooling is the way that it gives the student opportunities to struggle honestly with something difficult and not (ultimately) fail. That is, the student may fail the first time, or the fifth time, but because we're not rushing on to the next thing, we can count those as attempts toward a summit of mastery. We work at what doesn't come easily to us until we can get it at least acceptably right, and the getting it right is what we count in the end. Nobody says, Oh, you didn't climb Mount Everest that time; ?obviously you're a loseroid at climbing, generally, and will never climb anything ever. Maybe you're a hole-digger, have you ever thought of that??

Homeschooling also means that what works for one child does not have to work for the next, that a "good" curriculum is only as good as the good it does that student.

*

Thus far I have educated one person who would not voluntarily touch anything mathematical with a ten-foot pole, and one person who embodies the title of a book I picked up once at a library sale: ?A Romp Through Mathematics. The only thing that really worked for the former student was the Teaching Textbooks series, which I wish I had bought sooner than I did, because it would have saved us endless algebraic angst early on. She could self-teach, which was what she wanted, and while various mathematically-inclined friends of mine have opined that the program lacks depth and rigor, it was the right choice for a student who was, as my own college math professor put it, "not making a career of mathematics." In this instance, the question was not whether the student was going to learn mathematics deeply enough; ?it was whether she was going to learn mathematics at all. My own experience has been that it is, truly, entirely possible to spend fourteen years in school and not learn mathematics at all; ?as a parent?I was eager that my daughter not relive that part of my life. Teaching Textbooks was the answer in this instance, and while her standardized test scores in mathematics were not that impressive, she did pass her one college math class (Euclidian and Non-Euclidian Geometries) with a B+, which we both regarded as a highly satisfactory closure to the mathematical chapter of her story.

My second child, and current high-schooler, began working through Saxon Algebra 1/2, which I'd picked up off a freebie table at a homeschool-support-group meeting,?as a sixth grader. I have never been particularly a fan of Saxon and have always said, Hear hear, when people have described it as dull, dry, repetitive, and so on. Saxon looks to me the way math classes felt?to me. Brrrr. Prickly. Unfriendly. Inhuman.?No, thanks.?My son, on the other hand,?credits Saxon with awakening him to the enjoyment of math. He is also very much a self-teacher, and my approach to his math has been to buy the Saxon books, because that's what he's requested, and to find some video-teaching component to accompany them, either the D.I.V.E. CDs or the Art Reed DVD class lectures, for the times when he gets stuck. He also leans heavily on Khan Academy?for help when he needs it. Thus far he has not needed actual tutoring in math, though we do have access to a college tutoring center.

He has so far worked through Saxon's Algebra 1/2?and Algebra 1, and is currently in Algebra 2. Though, supposedly, the two algebras are supposed to cover geometry as well, I've had him do as much of Teaching Textbooks Geometry as he could get through last summer, for the sake of dealing with proofs, and he will probably finish that course next summer (Because we already own it, that's why). From there he will either move into Saxon's Advanced Mathematics or begin taking classes at the college, as math professors advise us. His ultimate interests have to do with science, and it will behoove him in high school to take as much math as he can as well, to be a strong candidate for the kinds of things he wants to do in the future.

*

Unlike me, my friend Anne-Marie is a math person, and I rather suspected that her philosophy with regards to mathematics would not be whatever. I was glad that she responded to a plea for input on this subject with the following:

Soyuz rocket blasts off from French Guiana

KOUROU, French Guiana (Reuters) - A Russian-made Soyuz rocket blasted off from French Guiana on Saturday and placed into orbit an Earth observation satellite for France, space officials said.

It is the fourth time that Soyuz, which first flew in 1966 and traces its roots back even further to the earliest Cold War intercontinental ballistic missiles, has been launched from outside its former Soviet bases.

The rocket lifted off at 11:02 p.m. (0202 GMT on Sunday) from a launch pad at Europe's space base near Kourou, French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America.

A first launch attempt on Friday was scrubbed due to a technical problem.

After a 55-minute flight, the Pleiades 1B, a one-ton observation satellite ordered by the French Space Agency (CNES) that will used extensively by the French defense ministry, separated from the rocket.

It will also be used by Spain's defense ministry as well as by civilian and commercial customers.

Billed by CNES as "a significant improvement in technology over previous generation satellites," Pleiades 1B is designed to relay to Earth high-resolution images as small as 70 centimeters (27 inches) from a 20-km (12-mile) wide Earth scan.

"It (Pleiades) is an innovative concept in that we share resources but we are able to separate the content for confidentiality," Lionel Peret, head of the Pleiades program for CNES, told Reuters.

It is the second of two satellites in the Pleiades series. The first was launched in December 2011.

European aerospace giant EADS Astrium was the prime contractor for the satellite.
