L.A. mayor: 'Carmageddon II' turns into 'Carmaheaven'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Sunday called "Carmageddon II," the sequel to last year's shutdown of one of the nation's busiest freeways, a success and thanked drivers for staying off the road and keeping the weekend traffic unusually light.

Bridgework that forced the closure of Interstate 405 was completed and lanes of the freeway through the Sepulveda Pass will reopen as planned for the Monday morning commute, Villaraigosa told a news conference.

"We are on track," he said.

A similar closure occurred last year to demolish portions of the Mulholland Drive bridge to allow construction of an additional freeway lane. Like last year, city residents heeded months of warnings to stay off the road and the fear of an epic traffic jam never materialized.

Villaraigosa says his hope for a "Carmaheaven" came true and thanked drivers for their cooperation.

"The real stars of this sequel were the motorists who took advantage of a car-free weekend and stayed off the road," he said.

Like Villaraigosa, some drivers couldn't resist comparing the scenario to a movie.

"It's like that movie 'Vanilla Sky,' ... where Times Square is empty," Sterling Gates told KABC-TV. "It's kind of like that. We're known for our traffic, and it's just nothing."

The closed, 10-mile section of the 405 carries about 500,000 motorists each day on a typical weekend, according to the Los Angeles Times. California Department of Transportation officials said that in order for "Carmageddon II" to be a success, at least two-thirds of those drivers need to stay off the road.

The rare sight of a carless freeway attracted many onlookers, including seven people who were cited for sneaking onto the roadway, the California Highway Patrol said.

Last year, three people slipped onto the freeway at the crack of dawn and snapped photos of themselves enjoying a gourmet meal on an eerily empty freeway.

Tornado hits Spanish fair, flood deaths reach 10

BARCELONA, Spain A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

An anonymous reader writes with news of a recent paper about the bias among science faculty against female students. The study, recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, asked professors to evaluate applications for a lab manager position. The faculty were given information about fictional applicants with randomly-assigned genders. They tended to rate male applicants as more hire-able than female applicants, and male names also generated higher starting salary and more mentoring offers. This bias was found in both male and female faculty. "The average salary suggested by male scientists for the male student was $30,520; for the female student, it was $27,111. Female scientists recommended, on average, a salary of $29,333 for the male student and $25,000 for the female student."

Analysis: Romney can still win, but it won't be easy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The last few weeks have been ugly for Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney.

A flat Republican convention, a fumbled response to unrest in the Middle East, reports of discord within his campaign and a secretly taped video of Romney deriding 47 percent of U.S. voters have left his team reeling - and has many Republicans fearing doom in the November 6 election.

There's more.

Democratic President Barack Obama has opened a slight lead over Romney in national polls, and new surveys indicate that Obama has a significant edge where it matters most: in Ohio, Virginia and Florida, the most coveted of nine politically divided "swing" states that are crucial to cobbling together the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

So, seven weeks before the election, is it already over for Mitt Romney?

Not yet. Despite the serial gaffes and the many questions about his campaign, Romney remains within striking range of the president.

The former Massachusetts governor still has time to change the trajectory of the race - even though he has not shown an ability to do so for the past several months, as he has cast Obama as a failure in overseeing a struggling economy.

There are three presidential debates in October, and Romney - who during the past month lightened his campaign schedule in favor of debate practices - clearly is pointing toward the showdowns with Obama as a chance to show Americans he is a better bet to turn things around.

Obama remains vulnerable thanks to a stubbornly high 8.1 percent unemployment rate, tepid economic growth and big majorities of voters who believe the United States is on the wrong track.

"Romney just came out of one of the worst months in presidential politics in recent memory, and he's hanging right in there," Republican strategist Rich Galen said. "If I was one of Obama's guys in Chicago, I'd be thinking: 'What does it take to get rid of this guy?' He won't go away."

Romney still faces huge challenges.

Surveys indicate most Americans see Obama as relating to their concerns better than Romney, a former private equity executive with an estimated fortune of up to $250 million.

A Republican convention dedicated to humanizing Romney appeared to have no lasting impact on voters. The video of Romney denigrating Obama's supporters as not paying income taxes and living off government handouts reinforced Democrats' message that Romney is an out-of-touch rich guy.

ROMNEY MUST SOFTEN IMAGE

To have any hope of beating Obama, Romney must project a warmer image, analysts say.

Romney appeared to be trying to do that late on Wednesday in Florida, where he softened his tone on Obama's healthcare overhaul and on illegal immigration, and told Univision that "this is a campaign about the 100 percent."

The comments came as his campaign opened a new assault on Obama that aimed to cast the president as wanting to redistribute wealth from rich Americans to the less fortunate.

"The question for Romney is whether he can do what he so far has not been able to do, which is turn around his personal image and make people more comfortable with him," said pollster Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found more than 40 percent of voters viewed Romney less favorably after seeing the "47 percent" video. A USA Today/Gallup poll found the video made almost one-third of independents less likely to vote for him.

"Romney's likability is still not great. People don't see him as credible, he's not seen as empathetic," Kohut said. "He's got to find a way to overcome all those things."

As his campaign has struggled, there has been no shortage of advice from prominent Republicans, many of whom have urged him to be tougher on Obama and more specific on his plans.

In a Wall Street Journal column on Thursday, Republican strategist Karl Rove wrote that "Romney has had a bad week but he can recover - if he tells voters more clearly what he would do as president."

A gaffe-free closing stretch from the sometimes awkward Romney is another key. "I think it would really help if he stops making mistakes," Galen said.

The stakes will be enormous at the first presidential debate on October 3 in Denver. It will focus on the economy and set the narrative for the final month of the campaign.

"Romney will have his best chance to paint a vivid and compelling picture of a brighter economic future," Republican pollster Whit Ayres said.

The Real Clear Politics average of national polls put Obama ahead by 3.1 percentage points on Thursday, with the Rasmussen daily tracking poll showing Obama with a 2-point lead and Gallup showing a dead-even race.

Other polls this week showed Obama with a larger lead, and in some cases crossing the 50 percent benchmark in support.

The Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Thursday had Obama leading 48 percent to 43 percent. A Pew poll gave Obama an 8-point edge, 51 percent to 43 percent, and an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll had Obama leading by 50 percent to 45 percent.

Obama also leads in eight of the nine most competitive toss-up states, giving him more options as he tries to piece together 270 electoral votes. Obama could survive a loss in Ohio or Florida - or even both - but losses in either state would be crippling to Romney.

"The lead Obama has in these critical states is far from insurmountable. They are in single digits," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College poll. "If the national dialogue were to shift two or three points, those battleground states would get close in a hurry."

A PUSH IN 'SWING' STATES

The leader in the presidential race in mid-September typically holds on to win. But recent contests also have shown the race can shift dramatically in the last two months.

On September 20, 2004, the Real Clear Politics average of national polls gave President George W. Bush an average 5.7- percentage-point lead over Democrat John Kerry. He eventually beat Kerry by only 1.5 points.

The Romney campaign has cited the 1980 race as a model, when Republican Ronald Reagan trailed Democratic President Jimmy Carter for much of the autumn in the Gallup poll but blew open the race late after a strong performance in their only debate.

But recent polls show no signs of improvement for Romney on some key indicators. The Pew poll found Obama was seen by a 3-to-1 ratio as the candidate who connects best with Americans.

Romney's lead on handling the economy, the biggest issue in the election, also has faded, with the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showing Romney and Obama tied on the issue. Pew and Gallup polls also found Democratic enthusiasm had jumped since Obama's nominating convention.

Republicans in "swing" states said, however, they were encouraged by the Romney campaign's voter-turnout efforts, designed to counter Obama's vaunted organization.

Fergus Cullen, a former state Republican chairman in New Hampshire, said Romney's campaign there was more organized than Republican John McCain's effort in 2008.

"With McCain in 2008, we could feel it slipping away by late September," Cullen said. "I don't feel that at all this time."

Ayres said that Romney "is in every bit as strong a position to win the presidency today as he was in June or July or August. Is he ahead? No. Is he close against an incumbent president? Most definitely. Does he have the potential to win? Without question."

If two birds meet deep in the forest, does anybody hear? Until now, nobody did, unless an intrepid biologist was hiding underneath a bush and watching their behavior, or the birds happened to meet near a research monitoring station. But an electronic tag designed at the University of Washington can for the first time see when birds meet in the wild.

A new study led by a biologist at Scotland's University of St. Andrews used the UW tags to see whether crows might learn to use tools from one another. The findings, published last week in Current Biology, supported the theory by showing an unexpected amount of social mobility, with the crows often spending time near birds outside their immediate family.

The study looked at crows in New Caledonia, an archipelago of islands in the South Pacific. The crows are famous for using different tools to extract prey from deadwood and vegetation. Biologists wondered whether the birds might learn by watching each other.

The results, as reported by St. Andrews, revealed "a surprising number of contacts" between non-related crows. During one week, the technology recorded more than 28,000 interactions among 34 crows. While core family units of New Caledonian crows contain only three members, the study found all the birds were connected to the larger social network.

The new paper is the first published study using the UW tags to record animal social interactions.

"This is a new type of animal-tracking technology," said co-author Brian Otis, a UW associate professor of electrical engineering whose lab developed the tags. "Ecology is just one of the many fields that will be transformed with miniaturized, low-power wireless sensors."

Biologists normally tag animals with radio transmitters that broadcast at a particular frequency, and field researchers use a receiver to listen for that frequency and detect when the animal is present. An encounter between small animals would only be recorded if the researcher was nearby.

The UW system, called Encounternet, uses programmable digital tags that can send and receive pulses.

"Encounternet tags can monitor each other, so you can use them to study interactions among animals," said co-author John Burt, a UW affiliate professor of electrical engineering. "You can't even start to do that with other radio-tracking technology."

Other research groups are using the UW tags around the world. Researchers at the University of Windsor in Canada are using them to study mating behavior in Costa Rican long-tailed manikins; a researcher at Drexel University is using them to study the interaction between birds and army ants in Costa Rica; German researchers are putting the tags on sea lions in the Galapagos Islands to study their behavior as they pull up on beaches; and researchers in the Netherlands are studying the social behavior of great tits, a small woodland bird.

"It's a big topic right now, the idea that animals have social networks," Burt said. He has been working with field biologists for the last three years to deploy the tags.

"There are other tags that can do proximity logging, but they're all very big and for larger animals. None is as small as Encounternet ? or even near to it."

The smallest of the UW tags weighs less than 1 gram (0.035 ounces) and can be used on animals as light as 20 grams (less than an ounce), about the weight of a sparrow. Researchers attach the tags to birds with straps that degrade and harmlessly fall off after the battery dies. The tag records nearby pulses, and the signal strength gives an estimate of the other animal's distance.

A typical study using the system includes a few dozen tags and between 10 and 100 fixed base stations. When tagged animals pass a base station the data is transmitted wirelessly from the tag to the base station, and from there to the Internet. Researchers can also reprogram the tags remotely ? for example, they can look at initial results to see when there are few encounters happening, and turn the battery off during those times to conserve power.

Burt completed his doctorate at the UW in 2000, with a dissertation on birdsong communication and learning. He wished that there was a way to automatically monitor bird interactions in the wild, and in 2005 joined forces with Otis, an expert in small, lightweight, low-power electronics. Burt managed the project to develop the tags, with funding from the National Science Foundation, as a research scientist in Otis' group.

This fall they founded Encounternet LLC in Portland, Ore., where Burt now lives. He is working to add a GPS component to record the location of encounters, and to add an accelerometer and other sensors that could detect an animal's behavior.

"People are excited about this because for the first time, it allows them to study smaller animal interactions and social networks on an incredibly fine scale," Burt said. "Social networks are turning out to be key to understanding many animal behaviors. People say Encounternet is the only thing they can find that can collect that information."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Yoko Ono and Amnesty International awarded the Russian punk band Pussy Riot this year's LennonOno grant for peace.

Ono presented the award to Pyotr Verzilov, husband of Nadia Tolokonnikova ? one of three imprisoned members of Pussy Riot sentenced in August to two years in prison for performing an irreverent song mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin inside Moscow's main cathedral.

"It's a terrible thing that all three girls have been jailed for not doing anything wrong. They were just standing for freedom of speech," Ono said at a ceremony in New York City.

Verzilov thanked Ono, saying the grant increased international pressure on Russian authorities to release the women.

The LennonOno Grant for Peace is given every two years to honor Yoko Ono's late husband John Lennon's dedication to peace and human rights.

(Reuters) - Chicago Teachers Union delegates vote on Sunday whether to call off a weeklong strike and allow schools to reopen on Monday.

Here are details of the new contract, according to a statement from the union:

* The union fought off Emanuel's demand for some element of pay based on merit.

* The contract confirms Emanuel's earlier victory in extending the length of the school day in Chicago by an average of about 90 minutes. But union teachers will not have to work longer hours. Instead, Emanuel will hire more than 600 additional teachers in art, music, physical education, world languages and other classes to cover the longer days.

* Emanuel compromised on a union demand for job security by promising that half of all teachers hired by the district must be union members previously laid off by the closing of schools. But Emanuel said he also won new flexibility for school principals to hire who they want for open teaching positions.

* The union said it won a pledge from the district that it will hire a racially diverse teaching force after a record number of African-American educators were laid off because of the school closings in recent years.

* On the key issue of teacher performance evaluations, Emanuel got a new system based in part on "student growth" including standardized test scores. But he had to back off on how much student test results will be weighted. The new contract will require 70 percent of the evaluation to be based on "teacher practice" and 30 percent on student performance including test scores. The new appraisals will not be used against tenured teachers in the first year of the system.

Federal judge hands Samsung setback against Apple

NEW YORK (AP) -- In a preliminary move, a federal judge has denied Samsung's request for a ban on imports of the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

It's another setback for Samsung in a globe-spanning legal battle, where each company is accusing the other of violating its patents.

A judge at the International Trade Commission in Washington ruled Friday that Apple doesn't violate four Samsung patents. The judge also found that the patents don't apply to any domestic industry. That will make it harder for Samsung to press the case before the full commission, says patent litigation expert Florian Mueller.

Three weeks ago, a jury in California ruled that Samsung owes Apple $1.05 billion for violating patents on features of the iPhone and iPad.

My last job at Microsoft was as the ?Chief Architect? of the Identity and Security Division (and briefly its successor organization, DAIP) and General Manager for Forefront UAG, Forefront TMG, Rights Management Services, Certificate Services, and some other odds and ends.? The odds and ends are always amusing.? Project Sydney reported to me for a short time.? And after RMS started working for me I was shocked to discover I was now responsible for the aging software and infrastructure used for Microsoft Reader DRM.? Funny how no one mentioned that before I took the job!? There has been a lot of news about all these items over the last year, but this posting is specifically about Forefront.

As you may know this week Microsoft killed off the Forefront brand, killed some of the Forefront products, and renamed others to reflect their real strategic alignment.? This is the natural outcome of a process that started about four years ago, and most specifically two and half years ago, as the economic downturn and resulting budget cuts at Microsoft collided with its ambitions in the security products space.

In the early years of the last decade (2000-2002) two factors came together at Microsoft that would lead it into the security products business.? The first was the recognition that the Internet had changed the game in terms of the security required of Microsoft?s software and ecosystem (and that Microsoft was failing miserably at it), and second was a search for new revenue streams to complement the maturing Windows business.? The former people are quite familiar with as Microsoft pursued Trustworthy Computing, took a hiatus from development on many of its products to do a security cleanup, created the security development life-cycle, replaced manual updates with automatic updates across its product lines, etc.??? But what of its ambitions for a new revenue stream?

Step back to the 2000-2002 period and look at the really strong IT growth businesses and you find Storage Management and Security at the top of the list.? In 2004 Symantec?would go as far as to combine these two by acquiring Veritas for $13.5 Billion (which is what Symantec?s market cap is today, hmmmm)!? Microsoft created two new businesses pursue these markets, a Storage Management business under Bob Muglia and a Security Business under Mike Nash.? Neither worked out as expected, though the Security Business came close.

The problem for Microsoft in the early days of its security products business was where to prioritize protecting the Windows ecosystem from malicious activity and where to seek revenue.? In one of the earliest moves they made (and I was not an employee at the time, so only have second or third-hand knowledge of what was happening) they introduced a free Anti-Spyware offering called Windows Defender.? At the time the Anti-Virus business was well established but mainstream vendors such as Symantec had not yet addressed the growing category of Spyware.? A complicating factor for Microsoft was its (then very active) anti-trust issues, where introducing anything free (or worse, packaged with Windows,) was a lightning rod for regulators.? So while to those of us on the outside it seems like introducing a free anti-virus product would have made sense, Microsoft instead chose to introduce the paid OneCare service (of which anti-virus was one component).? I don?t know how much of this decision was due to its revenue ambitions and how much was due to its anti-trust concerns, but nonetheless the Windows ecosystem did not gain the protection it really deserved.? Later, as third parties such as Avast! had success with free anti-virus offerings, Microsoft would introduce the free Microsoft Security Essentials.? And with Windows 8 it would (finally!) upgrade the built-in Windows Defender to have full anti-malware capability.

But the real story here is, of course, products for enterprises.? Enterprise security products is where the real money is.? There is also less conflict with the notion of ecosystem protection versus selling products because enterprises want far more than the basic protection capabilities.? No medium to large enterprise is likely to rely on Windows Defender (or Microsoft Security Essentials), not because of any perceived lack of protection but because they don?t offer the centralized reporting and control that enterprises require.? Likewise edge protection, that is protecting the corporate network, is something that enterprises have extensive control and reporting requirements on.? So this is where Microsoft?s product business focus went, leading to the Forefront brand and products.

Creating Forefront initially is a typical story of pulling together unrelated, even competing, products and acquisitions.?? For example, Microsoft made three attempts at addressing the SPAM problem.? First, the Exchange team took the Microsoft Research developed SmartScreen technology and incorporated it into Exchange as the Intelligent Message Filter.? This was a very basic capability that was heavily used by smaller Exchange installations, but was inadequate for larger enterprises.? Meanwhile the Exchange team was looking for a solution to high availability and archival requirements and acquired Frontbridge.? Frontbridge?also offered anti-SPAM as part of its service.? At the same time the security business acquired Sybari?so that it could offer an anti-SPAM product.? This became Forefront Protection for Exchange (FPE).? Eventually Frontbridge?would be split in two, with the archival offering moving to the storage management business and the anti-SPAM service moving to the security business and becoming Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (FOPE).

Anyway, Microsoft ends up with a bunch of security products for the enterprise.? Its ambition is to be a full-line security products vendor and build another $Billion business.? A major project is initiated to re-engineer the entire product family and integrate it under a truly unified management umbrella.? The group, at this point the Identity and Security Division (ISD), hires a lot of people and embarks on this major undertaking.? It turns out to be an over-reach that?is very late and is perceived by some to be both lost in the woods and to have made some poor technology choices.??A new management?team is brought in to get ISD on track.

At the same time this is happening Microsoft?s first set of budget cuts and large-scale layoffs hits, and ISD?is hit hard.? Two more rounds of cuts would occur over the following 18 months.? The first round didn?t really change ISD?s ambitions, it just added to the need to do a reset on the Forefront product plans and re-think tactics and priorities for addressing the market.? The second round lead to a re-think about competing across the security product space and to a few areas being declared non-strategic with dramatically pared investment levels.? The third round put back into play the question of what?s important, having a security products business per se or having security products that support the needs of other strategic Microsoft initiatives.

External observers saw the first results of our decision in a reorganization about?two and?half ?years ago.? ISD?was dissolved with some products moved to the groups they aligned with and the remained becoming a new Directory, Access, and Information Protection (DAIP) division.? In particular end-point security, as well as the general protection technology responsibility, was moved into the management division and the email (and related) filtering technologies were moved to the Office Server organization.?? Forefront retained a business organization and umbrella, but with the products split over three Microsoft divisions and two Presidents it is no wonder that the other shoe dropped this week.

Forefront as a business is gone.? The offerings within Forefront have either been absorbed into the Microsoft offerings they were aligned with, into the businesses they were aligned with, or where neither made sense been declared end-of-life.

Forefront TMG?(previously known as ISA) was one of the casualties.? This one strikes close to home because it was one of ?mine?.? And so TMG?was the leading product in the software-only category, but it had become an insignificant factor in the overall market.? In addition, the general view was that the network boundary was going to disappear?as the trends toward BYOD,?IPv6, and IPsec?accelerated.? As such TMG?had lost its strategic value before TMG?2010?(which was the major revamp and rename from ISA) even shipped.??It?s demise was inevitable, and I knew it couldn?t be far off when I saw an article in which Microsoft made available a SNORT rule that Microsoft IT had created.??That meant Microsoft IT had abandoned TMG in favor of a SNORT-based solution.

While Microsoft?s?moves with Forefront over the last few years will no doubt cause many customers pain, one has to ask if?in the end customers will be better off for them.? I think so.? Security is being better built into Microsoft?s products and management of security is more fully integrated into Microsoft?s overall management tool set.? The focus is on ?your email is protected?, ?your computer is protected?, ?you can centrally manage the security of all your systems? and less on ?how do we compete with security vendor X?.? I?m actually quite pleased with where things are ending up.

There is a lot more that can be said about why an effort like Forefront was so difficult to pursue inside Microsoft.? Comments I?ve made in other blog postings about Microsoft?s sales model apply, for example.? But I?ll stop here.? Forefront is gone.? Hopefully it won?t be missed.

LONDON (AP) - Anton Ferdinand's snub of John Terry in the pre-match handshake overshadowed Chelsea's 0-0 draw at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

The result ended the European champions' perfect start in the English Premier League on a day when Arsenal and Manchester United enjoyed big home wins.

Terry was jeered throughout a game played in a hostile atmosphere at Loftus Road in London. The match came two months after he was acquitted of racially abusing Ferdinand in a league game last year.

After opening with three straight wins, Chelsea was fortunate to escape with a draw. Park Ji-sung and Bobby Zamora wasted excellent chances for QPR in the second half. Eden Hazard came closest to scoring for Chelsea, which stays in first place with 10 points.

Arsenal thrashed Southampton 6-1 while United, sparked by Paul Scholes' goal on his 700th game for the club, routed Wigan 4-0. The results allowed both winners to leapfrog defending champion Manchester City, which drew 1-1 at Stoke.
